Summer 2016 Preview: Most Anticipated Movies
The final look at the Summer 2016 Movie Preview is my own personal most anticipated movies of the summer. I’ve covered a lot of genres and a lot of movies, but these are the ones I am most excited about seeing. So here we go, my five most anticipated movies of this summer.
5 – The BFG (Steven Spielberg, July 1)
I talked about Steven Spielberg’s The BFG in my ‘Awards Potential’ segment (you can read that here). Before any trailers had dropped, The BFG was one of my most anticipated movies of all 2016 just on the fact that it is a Spielberg movie and he is making movies as good as ever. The trailer has dropped and it is simply magical. It’s visually stunning and filled with a lot of heart and emotion and even though it might be little lighter than Spielberg’s last few, no director is better at elevating a children’s movie to a classic.
4 – The Nice Guys (Shane Black, May 20)
I already discussed why The Nice Guys is going to be awesome in the ‘Comedy’ segment of the Summer 2016 preview (check it out here). It landed as my most anticipated comedy of the summer, so I’m not going to get into that much more detail. I’m excited to see Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling be at their comedic best. I’m excited to see Shane Black return to the neo-noir comedy genre like he did with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005). I’m excited to see a bloody, twisty, funny film. I’m too excited for The Nice Guys.
3 – X-Men: Apocalypse (Bryan Singer, May 27)
I loved X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). It is the best of all X-Men movies and really rejuvenated the franchise. The trailers for this film just keep getting better and better. This movie looks dark, epic, and a blast with the highest stakes the X-Men have ever had to face. We’re getting new X-Men like Cyclops, Jubilee, Nightcrawler and Jean Grey, as well as exciting villains like Psylocke and the big bad, Apocalypse, played by the always great Oscar Isaac, as well as old favorites. This is going to be unlike and X-Men movie before and has the potential to be the best movie of the summer.
2 – Finding Dory (Andrew Stanton & Agnus MacLane, June 17)
Finding Nemo (2003) is one of the greatest animated movies of all-time and could be argued as the best. And, with Pixar’s stellar track record for sequels, there is no way I’m not excited to see Finding Dory. Who wouldn’t want a whole movie of our lovable, short-term memory fish Dory (voiced by Ellen Degeneres). She is one of Pixar’s greatest creations and Degeneres deserved an Oscar nomination for her voice work. We are going to get a slew of new, creative characters and Pixar’s usual dazzling style and sweet, emotional story. This will probably be the best animated movie of the year.
1 – Captain America: Civil War (The Russo Brothers, May 6)
The first movie of the summer is the biggest movie of the summer. I’ve already had the chance to see this movie (my review right here) and it will blow you away. Pitting Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) against Captain America (Chris Evans) over political interference has allowed Marvel to make its best movie since the first Avengers (2012). The action is explosive, the comedy and story are strong, and the movie never takes a side. I’ll post more thoughts on this in my full review, but this is the film to beat this summer.
